Background & Experience

Ruth completed her studies in Brisbane, Australia where she also gained experience as an Occupational therapy assistant, supporting families with children on the spectrum. She worked within community mental health settings, running sensory clinics and art groups for patients with anxiety, depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Ruth was a part of the University’s pilot project for canine-assisted Occupational therapy and also the fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) diagnostic clinic.  Returning to Singapore in 2023, Ruth has since been working in special education for children between 7 – 18 years of age.  Ruth also supports students at an Early Intervention (EIPIC) centre, working with 2-6 year olds.

Approach

Ruth has a strong belief in the power of play as a tool for healing, connection and wellbeing. She believes that everyone, regardless of age or ability, can benefit from opportunities to play. Play provides a safe and enjoyable way to explore emotions, build confidence, develop new skills and strengthen relationships.  She places a strong emphasis on working collaboratively with families and finding practical ways to embed therapy into everyday routines and activities. By making therapy fun, meaningful and relevant to the child and family, therapeutic goals can become a natural part of daily life rather than something that happens only within a therapy session.

Ruth has a particular interest in animal-assisted therapy, with a special focus on canine-assisted interventions. She is passionate about the unique benefits that working alongside dogs can bring to therapy, including supporting engagement, motivation, emotional regulation, confidence and social connection. She enjoys exploring creative and purposeful ways in which animals can complement therapeutic goals and help make therapy a positive and memorable experience.

Personal

Ruth spends a lot of her free time with her pets, including Koda, her 10 year old Australian Shepherd and Nala, her 3 year old Standard Poodle mix – who may occasionally make an appearance at the clinic!  She also enjoys getting creative and can occasionally be found at the pottery wheel, drawing or working on various craft projects.  Ruth has a love of travel and baking, and believes that no day is quite complete without a daily matcha latte!
