Background & Experience
Beth graduated with a qualification in Secondary Education in 2006. Working with kids and teens in an educational setting highlighted for her the need for good mental health in order to thrive academically. She spent a large portion of her time getting to know her students, trying to understand the barriers they faced in realising their full potential, barriers such as family dynamics, home environment, learning and/or physical disabilities as well as anxiety and social issues that can greatly impact a student’s ability to learn.
After leaving teaching, she pursued a career in mental healthcare and obtained a Master Degree in Counselling after moving to Singapore in 2017.
She has extensive experience working with kids/teens dealing with ADHD, ASD, anxiety, school refusal, bullying/social issues and depression. As such, she works closely with parents to address issues at home as well as at school. Beth also has personal experience with ADHD/ASD supporting various family members through diagnosis, intervention and management.
Her hands-on experience dealing with clients with trauma and abuse while working as a volunteer Counsellor at various charities has helped her develop and refine her practical skills, such as Flash Technique (EMDR) to help process trauma and phobias.
Beth offers counselling in English.
Approach
Beth has an integrated approach using parts of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as well as other modalities to suit the client. The blending of approaches helps with anxiety, depression, social issues, sleep disturbances, educational and behavioural issues in the home or at school. Each client is treated as an individual. This could mean providing practical treatment plans, through to being a sympathetic listener depending on what the client needs.
Beth likes to help clients set meaningful goals, process setbacks and celebrate achievements. Her Sessions are also playful and engaging for kids to create a sense of security through mutual interests. Having lived in various countries and experienced many cultures, Beth has acquired the right skills in processing identity as it relates to third culture and belonging.
For sessions, Beth will see younger children in the clinic with parents present; older children will have the initial session with parents present but subsequent sessions can be alone. Family involvement is encouraged, so joint parent/older child sessions can be accommodated.
Personal
Beth enjoys spending time with her husband and 2 daughters. She loves reading, baking, traveling, experiencing other cultures and watching K-Dramas in her spare time. She has a great sense of humour and embraces uniqueness in people, places and situations.
